Dark Circles - Information, Causes and Treatment

Dark circles usually occur as we get older. Dark circles are dark blemishes around the eyes. Also known as "bags under the eyes". In some cases, darkness around the eyes is hereditary. And many people with allergies seem to have dark circles. There are other culprits - something you can do something about.

Smoking, drinking a lot of coffee, soda or caffeine beverages will usually make dark circles worse. So does generally not eating right.

Causes of Dark Circles

The following are the most common causes of dark circles.

  • Heridity: The dark circles under the eyes are usually an inherited trait. If you have dark circles, there is a good chance that others in your family also have them. The more transparent your skin, also an inherited trait, the darker the circles appear.
  • Allergies and Eczma: Certain food allergies can cause dark circles too. Any infection of the eye that leads to itching can contribute to dark circles as rubbing and scratching the eyes darkens the skin. People who suffer from hay fever will notice that dark circles appear when the allergy is at its height.
  • Exposure to Sun: Exposure to sunlight, especially during the summer months, can cause a higher-than-normal level of skin pigmentation under the eyes.
  • Pregnancy and menstruation: The skin can also become more pale during pregnancy and menstruation, which again allow the underlying veins under the eyes to become more visible.
  • Nutrition: An improper diet, an unbalanced diet or lack of a nutritious diet can cause dark circles under the eye.
  • Age: If you have a propensity to have dark circles under you eyes, as you grow older, they are likely to become more noticeable and permanent. Excess folds of skin under the eyes will also make dark circles more pronounced.
  • Blood Circulation: Another main cause may be bad blood circulation. Cardio exercise increases blood circulation and may help the dark circles to disappear.
  • Medication: Any medication that dilates your blood vessels can cause dark circles under the eyes. As the skin under the eye is delicate an increase in blood shows through the skin in the form of dark circles.

Other possible causes of dark circles may be:

  • Lack of proper sleep.
  • Iron or other vitamin deficiencies.
  • Hyperpigmentation.
  • Fat loss in general which causes a sunken look.
