Breast Implants - Types of Breast Implants - Their Advantages and Disadvantages

Breast implants are regulated as medical devices. It is a prosthesis used to enlarge the size of a woman's breasts for cosmetic reasons, to reconstruct the breast or for the purposes of male-to-female gender reassignment surgery.

There are two primary types of breast implants: Saline and Silicone gel implants. Saline implants have a silicone rubber shell filled with sterile saline liquid. Silicone gel implants have a silicone shell filled with a viscous silicone gel. Breast implant surgery can enhance the size and shape of your breasts.

Types of breast implants:

There are many types of breast implants. Some of these are includes:-

Round Breast Implants

Round implants are less expensive than anatomical implants. Rounds can look just as natural as anatomicals, and vice versa.  Actually, when a round implant is held in a vertical position, it takes on the same shape as the anatomical implant.

Anatomical Breast Implants

Anatomical implants are designed to produce a more natural looking breast.  When looking at an anatomical implant from the front, it appears oval in shape.

Smooth Breast Implants:

These are also called texture breast implants. Smooth implants move freely in the pocket, whereas textured implants do not. Textured implants were designed to help prevent capsular contracture . Textured implants are generally firmer than smooth implants.  This is due to the thicker shell.

Cohesive Silicone Gel Implants

Cohesive gel implants have a strong and durable silicone shell that is composed of several layers - to prevent the "gel bleed" that can occur with standard implants. Additionally, the filler gel has a thick, cohesive consistency. If the shell were to rupture, the silicone would not spill out.

Advantages of breast implants:

Anatomical implants or breast implants provide breast enhancement with an additional level of coverage, improved natural shape and firmness. Some of the advantages of breast implant include:

  • It's a relatively simple procedure.
  • They might make clothes fit better.
  • They might help avoid embarrassment in public dressing areas.
  • Surgery and scarring are located only in and around the breast area, which is not the case with other types of breast reconstruction.

Disadvantages of breast implants:

The disadvantages of breast implant include:

  • The implant may have to be replaced at a later time.
  • You may get an infection and the implant may need to be removed.
  • If you have radiotherapy after having an implant, there is a risk that the tissue around the implant could become harder.
  • breast implants are not considered lifetime devices. They can and do rupture in time.
  • You may have to undergo multiple surgeries over the course of your life.
  • There may be the risks of surgery and anesthesia are greater than the benefits.
