Liposuction - Complications involved with Liposuction

Liposuction also known as lipoplasty or suction lipectomy is a cosmetic surgery operation which removes fat from many different sites on the human body. Liposuction is a surgical technique that improves the body's contour by removing excess fat from deposits located between the skin and muscle. Liposuction involves the use of a small stainless steel tube, called a cannula. The cannula is connected to a powerful suction pump and inserted into the fat through small incisions in the skin.

The affected areas can range from the abdomen, thighs, buttock , neck, arms and elsewhere. The fat is usually removed via a cannula and aspirator. Liposuction is not a low-effort alternative to exercise and diet. It is a form of body contouring and not a weight loss method. The amount of fat removed varies by doctor, method, and patient, but the average amount is typically less than 10 pounds.

Liposuction is a procedure that can help sculpt the body by removing unwanted fat from specific areas, including the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, upper arms, chin, cheeks and neck.

Liposuction may be performed in a surgeon's office-based facility, in an outpatient surgery center, or in a hospital. Liposuction will not change the appearance of the skin. Skin which is loose, dimpled, wrinkled, or having multiple depressions or waves prior to surgery, will not be improved following surgery.

Liposuction, is particularly well-suited for women and men who are of relatively normal weight but have isolated pockets of fat that cause certain areas of their body to appear disproportionate. These localized fat deposits may sometimes be an inherited trait and typically do not respond to dieting or exercise. Liposuction is often the only way to eliminate them.

Liposuction is one of the most preferred cosmetic plastic surgery option for body countouring. Learn more about the risks involved in the procedure and comparesurgery prices on alternative procedures.

Risks or Complications Associated with Liposuction:

These includes:-

Like any other medical procedure, there are risks involved. That's why it is important for you to understand the limitations and possible complications of liposuction surgery. Before you have liposuction, you should be aware of these risks and should weigh the risks and benefits based on your own personal value system. Try to avoid being influenced by friends that have had the procedure or doctors encouraging you to do so. Decide for yourself whether you are willing to take the risks involved in liposuction.

Complications

  • Infections:- Infections may happen after any surgery and may occur after liposuction. Some physicians prescribe an antibiotic to all patients undergoing liposuction but other physicians do not. Sometimes, infections may be serious or life threatening such as in cases of necrotizing fasciitis or with toxic shock syndrome, a serious, sometimes fatal infection caused by a bacteria, that is associated with surgery.
  • Embolism:- Embolism may occur when fat is loosened and enters the blood through blood vessels ruptured during liposuction. Pieces of fat get trapped in the blood vessels, gather in the lungs, or travel to the brain. The signs of pulmonary emboli may be shortness of breath or difficulty breathing. If you have the signs or symptoms of fat emboli after liposuction, it is important for you to seek emergency medical care at once.
  • Seroma . After liposuction, there may be a pooling of serum, the straw colored liquid from your blood, in areas where tissue has been removed.
