Intrinsic Aging - Its Information and the Signs of Intrinsic Aging

There are two classes of aging:

  • Intrinsic i.e. Chronological. In intrinsic aging , the skin becomes thinner and loses much of its elasticity, while the normal expression lines deepen. The boundary between the epidermis and the dermis is flattened, and the dermis starts to wither. The collagen, elastin and ground substance also decrease in amount, but the proteins remain in a reasonably stable state.
  • Extrinsic or Photoaged. The changes in mature, sun-exposed skin has unique clinical and histolic features that are not observed in sun-protected skin. In extrinsic aging the epidermis thickens. The amounts of collagen and elastin increase, but the structures of these proteins become disorganised.

Intrinsic Aging

In intrinsic aging, there is collagen production slows, the skin becomes thinner and loses much of its elasticity; dead skin cells do not shed as quickly; and turnover of new skin cells decreases slightly.Intrinsic aging, also known as the natural aging process, is a continuous process that normally begins in our mid-20s. Within the skin, collagen production slows, and elastin, the substance that enables skin to snap back into place, has a bit less spring. Dead skin cells do not shed as quickly and turnover of new skin cells may decrease slightly.

Within the skin, collagen production slows, and elastin, the substance that enables skin to snap back into place, has a bit less spring. Dead skin cells do not shed as quickly and turnover of new skin cells may decrease slightly. While these changes usually begin in our 20s, the signs of intrinsic aging are typically not visible for decades.

Signs of Intrinsic Aging

Some of the Common Signs of Intrinsic Aging are:

  • Fine wrinkles

  • Thin and transparent skin

  • Loss of underlying fat, leading to hollowed cheeks and eye sockets as well as noticeable loss of firmness on the hands and neck

  • Graying hair that eventually turns white

  • Hair loss

Intrinsic skin aging is characterized by:

  • Increased cellular catabolic activities.
  • The photoaging process induced by sunlight or artificial UV-exposure, which has a major impact on skin appearance, through an obvious free radical generation in the skin, with photoaging believed to cause of up to 90% of skin aging in "normal aging" individuals.
  • Deficient antioxidant defence mechanisms.
  • Deficient melanin synthesis.
  • Toxic environmental exposure, such as smoking, industrial pollutants, heavy metals, detergents, all of which are known to be potent free radical inducers.
  • Chronic infection/ inflammatory states associated with an increased free radical attack.
  • Deficient detox capacity.
  • Decreased sexual hormones availability.
  • Low blood perfusion, (e.g., arteriosclerosis or lack of exercise).
  • Sleep deficiency and stress.

The intrinsic aging is normal and affects the gravity of the body to show signs of sagging and wrinkling skin. Our expressions, over time, will leave their inevitable mark in the form of laugh lines, frown lines, etc. as the collagen and elastin fibers weaken, become less abundant. It's like bending a coat hanger in one spot. Eventually that area becomes weakened and breaks. These superficial layers of skin do not exhibit the same amount of moisture and oils within the skin resulting in a dry, brittle, lackluster appearance.
