Skin Care and Treatment for Acne Prone Skin

Acne is an inflammatory disorder of the skin resulting from an overactive sebaceous gland. It is marked by the eruption of pimples or pustules especially on the face.

Acne prone skin may have blackheads, enlarged pores, spots, pimples and excess oil. A specific skin care regime will help to reduce bacteria and therefore limit the outbreak of spots, it will also help to unblock congested pores and improve the health of the skin.

Most common cases of adult acne consist of blackheads, whiteheads & occasional breakouts of mild acne, while a small number developed inflamed acne papules or pustules. Severe cases require proper medical attention. For the majority cases of mild acne, it can be controlled with good sensible skin care treatment.

Skin Care for Acne-Prone Skin:-

To reduce acne and its damage to your skin, follow these tips:-

  • Choose a cleanser specially formulated for acne. These products often contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, which help to clear acne sores.
  • Clean your face gently, as trauma to the acne breakouts may worsen the acne or cause scarring.
  • When you sleep at night, make sure you are sleeping on a clean pillowcase and that you are the only person using your pillowcase. Pillowcases absorb traces of oil during the night, and can aggravate breakouts if not changed regularly.
  • If you have longer hair, make sure to pull it back when you sleep at night. The oil in your hair can aggravate your skin as well.

Treatment of acne prone skin:-

The effective treatment for acne prone skin are as:-

  • Benzoyl Peroxide:- This medication works in two ways. First, it goes after bacteria, which are crucial in the development of acne. Without bacteria, the sebum trapped under the skin would not become the fatty acids that cause all the swelling and inflammation in and around acne blemishes. Second, some studies show that benzoyl peroxide may also peel the dead skin cells from inside your hair follicles, to keep plugs from forming.
  • Never scrub the skin. Scrubbing the skin clean does not clear acne. In fact, scrubbing irritates the skin and can make acne worse.
  • Rinse with lukewarm water. Be sure to thoroughly rinse away the cleanser with lukewarm, not hot, water.
  • Sulfur and resorcinol:- These older medications tend to work mostly on the surface of your skin to help heal existing blemishes by unclogging pores.
  • Topical antibiotics:- These medicines are used by doctors to treat certain kinds of acne, such as postules and papules, but they may not be strong enough to have an effect on larger cysts.
  • Retinoic acid:- It is also known as Retin-A, this is another topical medicine used by doctors to treat acne. Like benzoyl peroxide, retinoic acid works by peeling skin cells from the hair follicles so that plugs do not form. The vitamin-A also inhibits sebum production, lessening the oil output.
  • Alpha hydroxyacids:- Alpha hydroxyacids have been shown in numerous studies to improve acne and can increase the thickness of sun damaged skin by 25%. The most common alpha hydroxyacids used for treatment of these problems are lactic acid and glycolic acid.
